After about a month or so of speculation, it looks like Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness co-writer Roberto Orci will serve as director for the next chapter in the franchise.

Variety reports:

Orci is currently writing the story with J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay and had been campaigning to replace J.J. Abrams as director for some time. Abrams is busy with directing the next installment of the "Star Wars" franchise and will only be producing this pic. Par, Skydance and his reps had no comment. Plot details are unknown, but cast members including Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto are expected to return. Abrams will produce along with his producing partner Bryan Burke and Skydance's David Ellison.

Mstars News recently reported on speculation about Orci being eyed to direct Star Trek 3. Here is an excerpt:

According to reports, Orci has basically convinced Abrams and Bad Robot that he'd be the perfect fit for director. Orci is also co-writing the script with Patrick McKay and John D. Payne, so moving into the directing position makes sense to most.

Unfortunately this article isn't a confirmation post because Paramount is a bit hesitant to hire Orci in this new role. This would be his first time directing, and fans apparently don't like his contributions as a writer-producer in the series. Though he's in talks to direct, it might not leave fans happy.
