Better watch out for this monster.

Godzilla took a huge bite out of the box office when it opened in theaters this weekend. The Warner Bros and Legendary Pictures remake of the monster movie grossed $93.2 million domestically in its opening weekend making it the highest May debut ever for a Warner film.

Runners up Neighbors and The Amazing Spider-man 2 trailed far far behind Godzilla, grossed $26 million and $16.8 million respectively.

What really helped the green monster leave his mark was the strong showing that the film had in Imax theaters. Ironically it turns out then when people want to see a gigantic monster, they want to see him on a gigantic screen. Imax is reporting that the film scored 15% of its revenue ($14.1 million) alone at these large format theaters. The film was only shown on 352 screens which averages to about $40,057 per-screen.

The film also made some serious moolah in the international market, to the tune of $103 million. The United Kingdoms grossed the most at $10.4 million followed by Russia at $9.1 million.

The weekend falling between the first weekend of May and Memorial Day is usually more modest in terms of box office revenue as its sandwiched between two huge film time slots, the first of the month an Memorial Day weekend. But it looks like Godzilla didn't pay attention to the typical rules.

The film did so well that there have already been talks of possible sequel. Dan Fellman, Warner's President, said "Looks like we're going to have a nice healthy run, and a great franchise."

Get ready for more Godzilla.
