HBO's fantasy series Game of Thrones has just become the cable networks number one show in history, surpassing previous top contender, mob series The Sopranos.

Currently in the midst of its fourth season, Throne has averaged a record-breaking amount of viewers with an audience of about 18.4 million per episode. The numbers are taken across all platforms including DVR, and the HBOGo app. Game of Thrones only bested The Sopranos by and average of 200,000 viewers, the mob series averaged about 18.2 million viewers an episode while it was on the air.

This season has seen the fantasy series improving on its own personal best, with each episode setting a series best in terms of ratings.

Before HBO announced the news today, they made sure to do their research as to not discredit the legacy of The Soprano's.

HBO had to get innovative in comparing the two shows since the way viewers watch TV has changed significantly since the hit series went off the air back in 2007. The rise of DVR as well as the HBO app have given the series more viewers than ever before, which could have helped it overcome The Sopranos. However, the HBO analysts assure us that they waiting until all the data was correct before releasing the news.

Even if the data wasn't correct we are sure that the viewers not counted in these numbers, including those who illegally pirate the show, would definitely have helped it overtake The Sopranos, after all, it is the most illegally downloaded TV show in America.

The final two episodes in the season are sure to build on the record-breaking audience when they premiere on June 8 and June 15 respectively.
