Shailene Woodley portrayed Peter Parker's longtime love Mary Jane Watson in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, but director Marc Webb decided to cut her scenes from the movie to keep the focus on the relationship between Peter (Andrew Garfield) and Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone).

The actress, who currently stars in The Fault in Our Stars, spoke to Vanity Fair and revealed her initial reaction to the news that Webb had cut her from the superhero sequel:

"For a few hours it was literally like, 'Oh, my God, was I awful? Why did they cut me? What are people going to think?' I woke up the next morning and I was like, 'O.K., it makes total sense.' I'm a pretty spiritual person, so I can just sit back and trust that everything happens for a reason, even if my ego doesn't like it."

Woodley seems to have the right attitude about the situation, and as great as she surely would have been as Mary Jane, the decision to cut the character was the right one for the movie. [WARNING: THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 SPOILERS AHEAD] Gwen's death at the end of the movie would have lost its emotional weight if Peter simply had Mary Jane waiting in the wings for him to move on after his first love dies.

It's still unclear at this point if Woodley will return for The Amazing Spider-Man 3 due to her commitment to the Divergent film series. It's also unclear if Webb and the studio would recast the role of Mary Jane should Woodley not return.
