MStars has learned some sad news out of Hollywood today. Actress and Broadway legend, Ruby Dee died Wednesday night at the age of 91.

According to TMZ, Dee passed away at home in New Rochelle, NY surrounded by her loved ones. Sources and a rep close to Dee's family confirmed her death.

Dee's successful career would win her an Oscar nomination at the age of 83 when she starred as Denzel Washington's mother, mama Lucas in the 2007 film American Gangster. The actress also won an Emmy and was nominated multiple times.

According to USA Today, age was not an issue with this Hollywood starlet. She once said, "I think you mustn't tell your body, you mustn't tell your soul, 'I'm going to retire,'" Dee told The Associated Press in 2001. "You may be changing your life emphasis, but there's still things that you have in mind to do that now seems the right time to do. I really don't believe in retiring as long as you can breathe."

Ms. Dee was on of the most successful African-American actresses in Hollywood. Some of her great works included, her role in the 1960s film, A Raisin in the Sun, Spike Lee's movies, Do the Right Thing, and Jungle Fever.

Her talent as a poet and screenwriter would also win her a Grammy. Dee also received the National Medal of Arts and the Kennedy Center Honors.

The actress and her late husband, Ossie Davis co-starred together and was heavily involved in the Civil Rights movement. Dee demonstrated with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X.
