With their panel quickly approaching at the Special Edition: NYC convention, Marvel Comics revealed a bit more about their Axis crossover event. Find out what's in store as Red Skull gathers the heavy-hitters of super villains to take down the Avengers and X-Men.

USA Today got the scoop about the epic crossover event with writer Rick Remender and series editor Tom Brevoot. Axis will be told in a trio of three-issue acts. The 9 part miniseries will spread onto Iron Man, Loki: Agent of Asgard, Magneto, Captain America, and Uncanny Avengers.

In the story, Onslaught was created from the soul of Charles Xavier, Professor X, and Eric Lehnsherr, Magneto. When the Red Skull defeats Onslaught, he gains the telepathic powers of Xavier and becomes unbelievably powerful. Seeing how Iron Man has assembled the Avengers, Red Skull gets the inspiration to form his own group of super-baddies.

Remender describes the roller-coaster ride that the superhero teams will be going through, "It's a nice cathartic chapter in the history of the Avengers and X-Men at the worst moment in their lives. Writing it, there were a couple of moments where I banged on my desk and said, 'Yes! Yay, nerd!' and I got excited for it."

Brevoot explains how the Red Skull is the perfect leader for the Marvel baddies, "[Red Skull] is pretty much black all the way in, and the deeper you go, the blacker it gets. The Skull is really all about grinding other people under his boot heel.''

In the Jim Cheung artwork, we have the entire lineup of the heroes and villains. The top part feature Iron Man, Storm, Luke Cage, Deadpool, and Thor. The bottom half has Red Skull, Sabertooth, and Doctor Doom.

Marvel Comics will be promoting Axis at the Special Edition: NYC the weekend of June 14-15. The Avengers/X-Men crossover event will kick off in October.
