Has The Amazing Spider-Man 3 Release Date Been Pushed to 2017?

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 hit theaters on May 2, but fans knew well before that date that The Amazing Spider-Man 3 would hit theaters on June 10, 2016. But according to a new report, Sony could push the release date back to 2017.

Ain't It Cool News dropped a tidbit at the end of its coverage of Warner Bros.' reported long-term plans for its cinematic universe to state that Spidey's next adventure would come later than expected:

"I have been told that The Amazing Spider-Man 3 has been moved to an undetermined date in 2017. Time for a second reboot?"

If true, there could be several factors at play here. Firstly, director Marc Webb is still attached to the project, and there are rumors floating around that he is working on another project for Fox. Secondly, it's possible The Amazing Spider-Man 2 did not get the critical or even financial response Sony expected, so it is pushing the third film back to make sure it gets it right. Finally, Sony has previously stated it wants to have Spider-Man movies every year, so perhaps the Venom or Sinister Six movies could come in 2016.

Screen Rant spoke to Webb and Andrew Garfield back in early May shortly after the second movie's release and asked about the theme of the third one:

"I haven't figured that out yet. For crying out loud, give me a break (laughs). We're just finishing this movie...Well, a theme, it's true, you've got to crack the theme early. But I'll tell you what. Themes, sometimes you work on a script and then other things emerge and then you readjust the theme and then you work on the script again. So I think it's too premature to talk about that."
