After a stunning season for his club, Manchester United, goalkeeper David De Gea was looking forward to his first World Cup with the defending champions, Spain. Of course it looked like he'd be behind veteran shot-stopper Iker Casillas. However, many believed the two should trade places. After Spain's 5--1 defeat against the Netherlands, many called for De Gea to be installed as the No. 1, but they will not get their wish now. Will things improve for the Spanish?

Spain were supposed to be a top contender to win it all, but their unexpected 5-1 hammered has created many questions that need to be answered. Iker was arguably to blame for 2 or 3 of the 5 Netherlands goals, so perhaps swapping him for De Gea would of been a smart move. However, a hip injury has ruled the keeper out of the tournament, meaning Casillas will stay in goal.

This has just added to the already intense misery being endured by the Spanish, and it's added to the pressure for Casillas to perform in his two remaining World Cup games. De Gea is Spain's future No. 1, but could he of made a difference at the 2014 World Cup? We may have to wait another four years to find out how he will perform on the biggest stage of them all.

As Iker Casillas' career comes to an end, can De Gea take his place and lead their country to more success, or are Spain's days of success a distant memory? Only time will tell.
