It's one difficult issue to talk about. But for Demi Lovato, she openly discussed about what caused her to self-harm which sent her off to rehab in 2010.

In an interview she had with "Self" magazine, the current X-Factor judge said that she needed to do "something physical" to be able to cope with the negativity she was feeling then. She added that if she didn't so something to herself, she feels that she would "explode."

"There were times I felt so anxious, almost like I was crawling out of my skin - that if I didn't do something physical to match the way I felt inside, I would explode," she said for the magazine's August issue. "I cut myself to take my mind off that. I just didn't care what happened. I had no fear," she continued.

Demi has been using a lot of self help tools to be able to cope with her struggles since she was discharged from rehabilitation. She had a famous meltdown in 2010 wherein she punched a back-up dancer while she was on tour with ex boyfriend Joe Jonas.

"I make time for myself and meditate. I've spent the past two years getting over an eating disorder and issues like self-harming and bipolar disorder," the singer said. "I have to work on this stuff every day. I'm reminded of that whenever I eat or feel down."

Demi also revealed that being diagnosed with bipolar disorder was a massive step for her. She said that finding out about it have helped her solve the puzzle.

"Finding out I had a real emotional disorder helped me put together the pieces of the puzzle. I remember being on my tour bus thinking, 'My life is so awesome right now, but I'm so depressed,'" she confessed. "Then, a few days later, I'd be on top of the world. It was really confusing. When I got diagnosed, my life made more sense."

And talking about her perception of beauty now and how she sees herself, she concluded, "When I'm confident enough to show myself without makeup on, that's when I feel my most confident."
