Thanos' appearance in the after-credits scene of The Avengers in 2012 hinted at a much larger threat in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Guardians of the Galaxy, which hits theaters on Aug. 1, should expand on that universe, and director James Gunn indicated as much in a recent interview.

Gunn spoke to Badass Digest and confirmed that Celestials will be a part of the movie in some capacity. Fans may recall the massive floating head of Knowhere, one of the Celestials, in the trailer for the movie.

"We have a couple of Celestials who we refer to in the film," Gunn said. "They're part of the overall structure of the cosmic universe. They're part of the fun of what the movie is."

Gunn went on to say Guardians of the Galaxy would introduce beings even grander than Thanos:

"Our characters, to some degree, have super powers, but at the same time they're just ordinary citizens of the galaxy," he said. "They just happen to be renegades - they're basically bikers. They're just these ordinary citizens who get caught up in this thing - because they want money in the beginning - that has completely cosmic overtones. There are characters like Thanos involved, and then there are characters bigger than that. Suddenly these mortals are playing in the fields of gods. I always find that a very interesting thing."

What sort of characters do you think the movie would introduce that are larger than the titan Thanos? Let us know in the comments below.
