In an official statement released this week, filmmaker Guillermo del Toro announced Pacific Rim 2 will indeed be made and is expected to hit theaters on April 7, 2017. This release date is set about four years after his 2013 monsters vs. robots blockbuster hit, so we're excited to see what he can do with the extra time!

According to Buzzfeed, Legendary Pictures stated:

Guillermo del Toro returns to direct Legendary Pictures' PACIFIC RIM 2, the next chapter of the epic action-adventure he created with 2013's hit original film. Zak Penn will write the script with del Toro. Legendary's Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni once again produce alongside del Toro, Mary Parent and Callum Greene. Jillian Share will executive produce. Universal Pictures will release the film worldwide in 3D and IMAX 3D.

So what can we expect from this sequel? According to director del Toro, the main characters will be returning!

"The characters I love will return," del Toro he said in a statement. "Raleigh, Mako, Newt, Gottlieb and who knows, maybe even Hannibal Chau - but we are taking them into a fresh territory that will display amazing sights and battles. The first film set the stage and now we're ready to have a blast."

According to this quote, stars Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day, and Burn Gorman are now expected to reprise their roles though at this time no deals have been made to make this official.

Del Toro also has an animated series based around the franchise planned to be released before the sequel.
