The Leftovers can be summed up in one word: confusion. Justin Theroux leads the show, but his character, Kevin Garvey, is maybe the most lost during and unbelievable era. But how would anybody feel after two per cent of the world's population disappears? This is the main question of the series, and right away in the series premiere we understand the answer - you feel absolutely baffled.

Based in an upstate New York suburb, a small town is dealing with "The Rapture," though nobody is actually certain it was really "The Rapture." Everyone deals in different ways. There's a creepy cult called "The Guilty Remnant" that doesn't talk, but smokes a ton of cigarettes; Some other cult-like organization run by some scary British guy named Wayne; the religious, and of course our main character, Chief Garvey.

Everyone is painstakingly moving on from an unexplained tragedy. Garvey is the show's focus, giving us an unstable anchor to be guided through the mess that is this new time.

Though there are plenty of changes and differences in the world after the apparent rapture, we learn through Jill Garvey (Margaret Qualley) that high school is still very awkward. Boys, quarreling, incredibly weird iPhone app-based spin-the-bottle games that involve also involve violence ... well that's pretty unusual actually. It looks like "kids these days" just do pretty much anything to be distracted.

A big "who cares" oozes out of Jill throughout the episode, but we can see she wants some sort of connection.

We meet the other focal points of the town in the episode's climax - a parade and ceremony honoring the "heroes" that disappeared. "The Guilty Remnant" with signs spelling out "Don't Waste Your Breath." Hell brakes loose; a dreary piano plays over the violence. The Leftovers has just defined the first season in one scene.

The powerful series premiere ends with the revelation for the viewers that Garvey's wife didn't disappear like we assumed, she joined "The Guilty Remnant."

What we learned from the first episode is that creators Damon Lindelof and Tom Perrotta definitely have something huge and depressing planned for the wrest of the season. Should we think outside the box with this one as we did with Lindelof's Lost or is this more cut-and-dry than we want to admit?

We have so many questions for episode two, mostly abut Wayne and his organization. Kevin's son Tom is there, screaming in swimming pools, but should we consider this another cult? Who was Keving having sex with when "The Rapture" occurred? Is that why Laurie started smoking and wearing white?

Honestly the questions keep piling up and we can't wait for more.
