It was evident that after losing defensive veterans Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic from their roster that Manchester United would need help. The club have youngsters in Phil Jones and Chris Smalling to fill the gap, however, it seems new boss Louis Van Gaal wants help, and he believes a defender in the World Cup as the answer. Either Germany's Mats Hummels or Netherlands' Stefan De Vrij appear to be his top targets.

Hummels would cost a minimum if $35 million, but he would instantly upgrade their entire team in many ways. De Vrij has had am excellent World Cup, working under Van Gaal, and he would present the club with a cheaper option at around $15 million. The club have already spent $100 million on new recruits, and it appears they're ready to double or triple that in an attempt to revitalize and revamp their faltering squad.

Van Gaal's Netherlands side have been phenomenal at the 2014 World Cup, and because of that it seems many believe he will be a huge hit at Old Trafford, meaning many players want to play for Manchester United, despite their horrendous 2013/14 season and their lack of UEFA Champions League football for the coming season. What players do they need to get back at the first attempt?

Can they land. Borussia Dortmund's loyal defender, or will they go Dutch and sign De Vrij? It's going to be an interesting time for the club, but one can wonder, will all of these recruits lead to more uncertainty, or will they have a much better season?
