Reports confirm that popular Detroit meteorologist Dave Rexroth lost his left eye in a freak fireworks mishap over the July 4th weekend. Rexroth is scheduled to undergo prosthetic surgery on Wednesday (July 9) and is expected to fully recover by September. The morbid injury severely hindered Rexroth's eyesight.
Rexroth, a favorite among the crew at Detroit's Channel 7 WXYZ-TV, was hurt while vacationing with family in Iowa City. The unfortunate accident occurred during a fireworks display on Friday evening (July 4). According to the station's official website, Rexroth lost total sight in his left eye. He's currently recovering at a local hospital in Iowa.
WXYZ Vice President Ed Fernandez released in a statement:
"Our thoughts and prayers are with Dave and his family and they have our full support during this difficult time. As Dave recovers, we'll provide updates on his progress - and we look forward to his return to Action News."
Details surrounding the actual mishap involving the fireworks still remain unknown.
