Actor Columbus Short has made his first public comments about his departure from ABC's hit Scandal back in April. And based on his words, it seems the network was the driving force behind his exit rather than series creator Shonda Rhimes.

"They did not throw me to the curb like trash. That's my family," Short told Access Hollywood. "They knew that I was going through a tough season and they rallied around me and wrapped their arms around me, from Shonda to the craft service man. We're a family.

"I think, at a certain point, when you're [hearing] a barrage of stories after stories, ABC justifiably would want to distance themselves. They did the right thing."

Short learned in April the network would not pick up his contract option for Season 4 of the hit series. His character, Harrison Wright, was held at gunpoint in the Season 3 finale, so it would be easy enough to write him off the show.

The news came after a troubling few weeks for Short, who was accused of threatening his wife, Tanee Short. The actor was also arrested last Friday for public intoxication in Dallas.

Access Hollywood asked Short if he had a drinking problem, to which the actor replied, "To be honest with you, I struggle with medicating with alcohol. And that's a real truth. I think that deserves more looking into."
