Season 1 of Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. ended with Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) in charge of the fledgling rebirth of the spy organization, which dissolved in the wake of the events of Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Not everything is well with Coulson, though, as he was scribbling alien language on the wall as the season ended.

Co-showrunner Jed Whedon spoke to Zap2It.com and revealed that Coulson and his cohorts are in some serious trouble when Season 2 starts.

"Last we saw them, they were being hunted," Whedon said. "They were no one's friends. They're in a bit of a pickle when we find them."

Coulson, particularly, will have some trust issues in the wake of all the HYDRA betrayals and schemes in the latter episodes of Season 1.

"Once we could say 'Hydra' and there were double-crosses and spies in our midst, the show got really interesting," said executive producer Jeffrey Bell, "and so [we're] continuing that with S.H.I.E.L.D. and Coulson not willing to trust people and not willing to bring people in, but having to because he doesn't have as many resources; we think we can keep that 'trust no one' alive."

Season 1 suffered from uneven pacing and a slow pace until The Winter Soldier threw the doors open and allowed for a creative surge in the final few episodes. But the showrunners seem to have a clearer vision for Season 2.

"We have our arcs, we have our tentpoles, and we have quite a few off the board," said co-showrunner Maurissa Tancharoen. "We're starting production on our first episode next week, so that's pretty fun."
