It's no secret that Star Trek actor and LGBT activist George Takei and actor William Shatner never saw eye to eye, but that didn't stop Takei from addressing the issue when he was on Real Time With Bill Maher on Friday.

Takei didn't hold back: "He is Canadian. And Canadians have a certain image of being even-tempered and friendly and all that," Takei said of Shatner. "Well, he is a person who is that way ... with himself. He is very self-centered."

Takei said that although the two men are professional while working it is with, "it's with a lot of difficulty," he conceded."

Takei said while everyone working on Star Trek knew he was gay, one did not: "Except for one member of the cast. It went right over his head," he laughed, indicating Shatner.

During the show's run in the 1960s, Takei tried to get Gene Rodenberry to address gay issues, since Rodenberry had already tackled other social issues on the show, but he was hesitant and wary of the possible repercussions.

"He said that if we push the envelope too far, then he wouldn't be able to deal with any issues at all," Takei said.

Of the death of comic book character Archie (Archie died while protecting best friend Kevin Keller, Takei said, "The next generation is coming and Kevin Keller is out and happy and partnered... I guess their handing the touch over to a new generation where being gay isn't a big thing."
