Benedict Cumberbatch sent hearts a-flutter when he took to the stage to promote Dreamworks' The Penguins Of Madagascar at his first ever San Diego Comic-Con appearance.

Fans queued overnight to see Cumberbatch, who they known from the BBC series Sherlock. Moderator Craig Ferguson, well aware of Sherlockmania said, "If anyone mentions the S word, Comic-Con will be cancelled."

(That was a tall order indeed since a fair number of the panel's 6500 attendees were in Sherlock cosplay.)

While joined by actors John Malcovich and Jim Parsons to promote the animated feature, Cumberbatch was the man fans came to see. As he took to the stage, Cumberbatch said, "You exist!" to screams from the audience.

In Penguins, Cumberbatch voices a wolf named Agent Classified, a super spy who runs an organization called the North Wind, which protects animal welfare.

Cumberbatch answered questions with a bit of self-depreciation, humor and a whole lot of sexy.

How did he prepare for the role?

"I worked in Yellowstone park as a wolf for awhile. I was accepted by the pack quite quickly. It got a bit hairy, no pun intended, when I became the alpha male. In about a month or two, I realized that two of the other wolves were Christian Bale and Daniel Day-Lewis."

When a fan was flummoxed as to what question she should ask the young actor after her original question was already answered, Cumberbatch offered a suggestion.

"Ask me what my shoe size is," he beamed. Then quietly, "It's a whole other arm."

Swoon!
