Since Scott Derrickson had been named as the director Marvel's Doctor Strange, there has been excitement building over who will be chosen for the lead role. Now Joaquin Phoenix's name has been thrown into the mix as the Master of the Mystic Arts.

In the Marvel Universe, Stephen Strange was once a proud neurosurgeon with a promising medical career. When an accident left his hands useless, Strange traveled to the farthest regions in search of a healing mystic. All of a sudden, the former doctor trains himself to become the Sorcerer Supreme and protect Earth from evil forces.

A bunch of celebrity names have been thrown into the studio's wish list. After winning the Oscar for Dallas Buyers Club, of course Jared Leto had to be put in there. After starring in The Dark Knight Rises, it makes sense to see Tom Hardy return to another comic book franchise.

The closest we had to an official announcement was when Edgar Ramirez's name popped up. Ramirez and Derrickson worked together for their supernatural thriller, Deliver Us From Evil.

A source close to The Hollywood Reporter reveals that the deal has gone further along than the offering stage. Even multiple sources have told The Wrap that the actor is in consideration.

With the Walk The Line actor in the running, it's definitely a reason to get hyped up. But wait a second, isn't The Master already in another comic book movie, Superman v Batman: Dawn of Justice. Wouldn't scheduling prevent this from happening?

Marvel is expected to make a statement about Doctor Strange on Saturday at San Diego Comic Con. Readers, what do you think of Joaquin Phoenix as the Sorcerer Supreme?
