IDW Entertainment (IDWE) and Ideate Media have bought the rights to Douglas Adams' Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency serial novels. Max Landis, son of filmmaker John Landis (American Werewolf In London) and screenwriter of Chronicle, has been tapped to executive produce and penn the television pilot.

Book lovers may recognize Adams from his sci-fi comedy masterpiece,The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy. The novelist then followed up the blockbuster phenomenon with another series of best-selling books. These volumes follow psychic detective Dirk Gently, who doesn't believe in psychics.

In Holistic Detective Agency and The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul, we find the private detective trying to solve impossible and strange crimes. The supernatural investigator is able to sense when the fabric of reality is being disturbed. Ancient gods, extra-dimensional aliens, and a missing horse are all part of the case.

Landis remembers jumping on board with the project after hearing the author's name, "Douglas Adams is a visionary who forever changed the way science fiction is written and talked about, and even thought about." The Me, Him, Her director continues, "Even the way real actual science is thought about and without whom, our culture would be noticeably different for the worse. I'd also just like to say, 'Holy Crap! It's Dirk Gently!"

As mentioned here, this makes the second project IDWE is working on. Jonathan Maberry's horror thriller, V-Wars, is also making its rounds to the TV screen. A comic book series based on Dirk Gently will be released by IDW Publishing next spring.

Max Landis will adapt the popular sci-fi novels by Douglas Adams. Readers, are you excited to see Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency on your TV screen?
