The Colbert Report host Stephen Colbert chose to toss on his mutton chops, spark up a cigarette and don a 70s style blazer to commemorate the 40th anniversary of President Richard Nixon's resignation on last night's episode of the Comedy Central hit.

In a segment known as The Colbert Report Special Report: Scandal At The White House: A Nation Betrayed – A Fond Look Back '74, the comedic host laid out a retro spectacular in the aforementioned getup, not only outfitting himself but also the televsion screen. He then proceeded to detail the intricacies of the infamous Watergate – or, as he puts it, WatergateTM – scandal.

Come to think, we're not so sure how many of the comedian's younger viewers were alive to see a TV like that. What, no remote?

Check out part one of the host's segment below:

Following his report, the soon-to-be Late Show host sat down with both Pat Buchanan and John Dean, two men who were closely linked to the famed break-in. And yes, that, too, kept to the retro style.

Watch the interview with Buchanan here:

In viewing the videos, it's hard not to wonder how different TODAY would be if Matt Lauer, Savannah Guthrie and Al Roker chain-smoked during their broadcasts. On second thought, perhaps it's for the best.

In the end, despite that technical difficulty with the vertical hold control, it's seems safe to say that Colbert's A Fond Look Back '74 was a rather solid win, no?
