'Godzilla 2' Release Date News, SPOILERS: Gareth Edwards' 2014 Reboot Monster Movie Sequel Hits Theaters In 2018 After 2016 'Star Wars' Spinoff Project

Gareth Edwards' 2014 reboot of the classic monster movie Godzilla was such a big hit, it was given a sequel before it even hit theaters. This week we learned that the release date set for Godzilla 2 is June 8, 2018, which works out well for the busy director, since he's currently working on 2016's Star Wars spinoff film!

With this release date so far away, what can we expect from Edwards and his next chapter of Godzilla? Well, at the 2014 Comic-Con last month, Legendary Pictures CEO Thomas Tull revealed exactly what we can expect in terms of foes: Mothra, Rodan and Ghidorah.

Though this was mainly a suggestion of hope around getting the three monsters into the film, we definitely have heightened expectations now!

We mentioned above that Edwards was recently named the director of the first Disney Star Wars spinoff films, set to hit theaters in 2016.

Tull shared some words on this news back in May.

"Gareth's filmmaking talent makes him one of his generation's most creative and visionary directors," he said in a statement. "The plan has always been for Gareth to direct a different film before we started on another Godzilla, but who knew it would a Star Wars installment? We have a great plan in store for Godzilla fans and I am looking forward to seeing Gareth's imprint on the Star Wars universe."
