Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns to television on Sept. 23 for Season 2, and the first photo of Clark Gregg as Agent Phil Coulson, or should we say Director Phil Coulson, has surfaced.

Comic Book Movie posted a scan from the next issue of Entertainment Weekly that shows Coulson in the big boy chair. You can see the photo at the top of the page. The accompanying text is as follows:

"How's this for an extreme makeover? Last May, S.H.I.E.L.D. was dismantled after being infiltrated by the terrorist organisation Hydra. Now it's time for Director Couson (Clark Gregg, above) and his team to rebuild and save the day, with a little help from Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), the former director. Their new headquarters, buried safely underground, in a reconverted SSR (Strategic Scientific Reserve) bunker from WWII, will be 'authentically vintage,' says executive producer Jeff Bell. 'Of course, Fury has tricked it out with a few updates and a handful of cool toys.'"

You can check out a photo of Lucy Lawless on the show here. Season 2 of the show follows the events of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which dissolved S.H.I.E.L.D. The show dealt with the fallout in its final Season 1 episodes, so Season 2 will be all about rebuilding the spy organization. Lawless' character, veteran agent Isabelle Hartley, links up with Coulson to help him reconstruct the agency.

In other news, Marvel has unveiled the first look at Brian Patrick Wade as Crusher Creel, better known in the comics as Absorbing Man.

Marvel posted an official announcement on its site Thursday and posted a photo of the Generation Kill and Teen Wolfstar. "With his ability to absorb the properties of anything he touches, Creel will put Coulson and his team through their paces when their second season kicks off...but you'll have to wait until then to see how their battle turns out!" Marvel said.
