Names continue to drop into the rumor mill as Marvel Studios starts Phase 3 of its Cinematic Universe. Now actor Jack Huston, from HBO's popular gangster drama, Boardwalk Empire, and Joaquin Phoenix (Her) are rumored to be in the running for Marvel Comics' superhero role of Doctor Strange.

With the project landing Scott Derrickson (Sinister) as its director, the search continues for casting agents to find the right leading man. We also mentioned here that there was a growing wish list of actors, with such high-profile names such as Tom Hardy (Inception), Benedict Cumberbatch (Star Trek: Into Darkness), Jon Hamm (Mad Men), included in the roster.

There were even rumors of the Walk The Line  actor being approached during the recent San Diego Comic-Con as well. According to Entertainment Weekly, the Gladiator actor is supposedly in final talks to play the Sorcerer Supreme.

This Is Famous claims the American Hustle actor is in the running too. Though the cable drama is a critical darling, the show isn't as popular like True Blood. The fact that the indie Not Fade Away actor is an unknown might work to his advantage.

Anyone else notice the connection between Boardwalk Empire and Marvel's Daredevil? Before he became the man without fear, Charlie Cox was Nucky Thompson (Steve Buscemi)'s right-hand/bodyguard. Huston was also on the show as the disfigured hit-man Richard Harrow who met his demise during the ill-fated shootout in the fourth season finale.

Because the acting duo worked together, Cox could easily recommend Huston to Marvel executives, which could be a big benefit.
