Garfunkel And Oates Fill Us In On What People Really Mean When They Say Happy Birthday On Facebook [WATCH]

Think all of those nice people on Facebook wishing you a happy birthday are your friends? Well, thanks to Garfunkel and Oates, it looks like its time to think again!

If you're like the rest of us, your Facebook "friends" are merely people you once knew and/or had a history with. Actually, some might even fall into the category of ones you've never met before. Regardless, we continue to add these "friends" for one particular reason: because we all want to be liked.

And what better way of liking someone (other than "liking" them on Facebook, that is) than wishing them a ever so kind, ever so virtual, happy birthday on their Facebook wall?

You know the kind –– HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!! :) 

The below video from the comedy duo and current IFC Garfunkel and Oates stars shows us that because of this "mutually unstated unattached cohesion that Facebook created," we're able to keep up with the birthdays of those, let's face it, acquaintances we're all weakly tied to. Because of that, we can easily make the person turning another year older feel better about themselves and their social status.

So, what exactly does "Happy Birthday" mean on Facebook? As the duo states, it's still a birthday message, but more so a "Happy Birthday to my Loose Acquaintance" message. So, while it's still a nice gesture...it's just not as nice as we were thinking.
