Before the graphic novel hits stores in October, writer Neil Gaiman and artist Lorenzo Mattotti's re-imagination of the classic Brothers Grimm fairytale Hansel and Gretel is already getting the big screen treatment. Juliet Blake has teamed up with the author to develop a live-action version the popular tale.

In the German tale, Hansel and Gretel are young siblings who find themselves lost in the forest and end up discovering a house in the middle of nowhere. The walls are constructed of mouth-watering cake and frosting. They end up fighting for their lives when the cannibal witch wants to eat them for dinner.

Variety reports that developing another live-action "Hansel and Gretel" movie will be heading into the future. Blake first collaborated with Steven Spielberg and Oprah Winfrey in the production of Richard C. Morais's heart-warming novel, The Hundred-Foot Journey. Now, Blake's Chickens for a Fiver production company has acquired the rights to the comic.

The Sandman writer discusses what the adaptation means to him: "For me, retelling Hansel and Gretel was a way of telling an old tale in a way that made it immediate and true, and about us, now." Gaimen added, "It reminds us of how paper thin civilization really is. It's about hunger, and about families."

Since Coraline and Stardust have been made into feature films, it sure looks like Neil Gaiman's latest work, Hansel and Gretel, will be making its way to the big screen. Readers, are you excited to see this live-action version?
