Alex Kurtzman Previews Venom Movie Spinoff in Amazing Spider-Man Franchise

Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci's screenplay for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 received a mixed to negative reaction from both fans and critics alike, but their fingerprints will remain on the franchise as Kurtzman is set to direct the Venom spinoff. In a new interview, Kurtzman previews what fans can expect from the much darker character.

MTV News spoke to Kurtzman about the spinoff, which rumors say will be called Venom/Carnage. The film does not have a release date yet (unlike the other spinoff, The Sinister Six) and no definitive plans have been announced, but Kurtzman spoke about the movie anyway. "The idea is that you can do things with Venom that you can't do with Spider-Man," he said. "Venom is the representation of every line that will get crossed. He's a much darker character."

Kurtzman also made an interesting comment when he remarked that Sony has an advantage over Marvel in building this shared movie universe, even though Marvel has set the standard for doing so with its Avengers films. "You know, Spider-Man has the benefit of having so many more movies than even some of the movies that have 2′s and 3′s in front of them from Marvel," he said. Of course, the Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire films are not a part of the Amazing Spider-Man universe.

Finally, Kurtzman offered some advice for whoever works on The Amazing Spider-Man 3, which is scheduled for release in 2018. "I think as long as it keeps staying true to character, and true to who Peter is, and putting him in interesting and complicated situations, it'll survive because it's so beloved. Everybody loves Spider-Man."
