Written by Kevin Williamson and directed by Jim Gillespie, I Know What You Did Last Summer is getting a modern reboot by Sony Pictures. The horror/comedy slasher flick, which starred a then-unknown cast of newbies - Jennifer Love Hewitt, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe, and Freddie Prinze Jr.,  - will get the remake treatment written by Oculus co-writer/director Mike Flanagan.

Based on author Lois Duncan's novel, the original centered around a group of divided teens reunited a year-long split. They haven't been the same since they covered up a car accident last sumer. Now a mysterious killer, wearing a slicker suit and a hook for a hand, is taking them down one-by-one.

According to Deadline, Flanagan and writing partner Jeff Howard are adapting the remake for today's audience. The slasher franchise spawned two installments, a sequel which featured Hewitt and direct-to-video follow-up. Neal Moritz, who has produced each film, will stick around for this revamp.

Though Gillespie directed the original, there are talks of Flanagan stepping into the director's chair. Remember in the Oculus trailer, we saw Karen Gillan unexpectedly biting a light bulb. Let's hope there are more scares than laughs in this version.

This isn't the only work of Williamson that is getting an update. As we reported here, Scream has found a new home at MTV with a brand new cast and director. Williamson will not have any involvement, but director Wes Craven is staying on board as executive producer.

I Know What You Did Last Summer will hit theaters again in 2016. Readers, are you excited to see this remake?
