While there were plenty of naysayers popping up when Tom Cruise was named the lead in the movie adaptation of Lee Child's book series Jack Reacher, box office numbers and rave reviews proved the movie was just plain good! As we all know, with success comes sequels, but both Cruise and director Christopher McQuarrie are busy with the next Mission: Impossible film, so what does tat mean for Jack Reacher 2? Well Child this week gave a great update on the next of his movie adaptations!

Basically, the novelist explained that a new director would have to be hired for the project.

"McQuarrie is going to be in post-production on Mission: Impossible 5," he said, according to Empire Online. "He just physically can't do it. It's going to be a new backroom crew, which I think is good. I thought the McQuarrie movie was fantastic, but let's see someone else's take on it."

We're not even sure if Cruise will return as Reacher, though we sure do hope so. Meanwhile, the next movie will be based on Child's 18th Jack Reacher novel Never Go Back, which features a teen girl alongside the menacing Reacher.

Child went on to talk about why he wanted to adapt this book instead of the handful of his others.

"Any of these books, you look at them and say 'we could do that', but then you look at it and go, 'well, how are we going to do it? They're all very difficult.' [The character Samantha Dayton] convinced them about which book to make for the next movie," he explained. "It's almost a three-hander in terms of audience appeal - you've got Reacher, you've got the woman sidekick (Major Susan Turner), and then you've got this strong teenage girl character which they were very interested in."
