Singer and Actress Polly Bergen Dies at age 84.

Singer and actress Polly Bergen passed away of natural causes today, Saturday, Sept. 20 at the age of 84, the Associated Press reports.

According to her publicist the "Cape Fear" actress died at her home in Southbury, Connecticut surrounded by family and close friends. In the late 1990s the actress had been diagnosed with emphysema and other ailments, if this was the cause of her death has not been known yet to the media.

Glee star Chris Colfer made a statement about his former 2012 Struck by Lightening co-star. "Farewell to my dear friend, Polly. I'm so blessed to have had you in my life. No one could make me smile or laugh like you; I will miss you with all my heart. 'Grandma' for a movie, but family for life," the actor posted on his instagram.

During 1957-1958 Bergen had her own NBC comedy and variety show, The Polly Bergen Show.

She is most notable for her original role in "Cape Fear" as she played the terrorizing wife opposite Gregory Peck and Robert Mitchum.

She was a thriving actress of her time even winning an Emmy award for her portrayal of singer Helen Morgan in the TV series Playhouse 90.

In more recent times Bergen played the mistress of Tony Soprano's father, in the hit HBO series The Sopranos. She had an Emmy Award nomination for playing Lynette Scavo's mother, Stella in the show Desperate Housewives.

Amongst her many character roles and guest appearances she played the first female President of the United States, as President Leslie McCloud in the 1964, Kisses for My President.

On a personal level, she married Hollywood talent agent, Freddie Fields. They had two children together, Pamela Kerry Fields and Peter William Fields who were adopted.
