Frank Wren has been relieved of his duties as the general manager of the Atlanta Braves, the team announced in a statement on Monday.

The Braves confirmed the news with an official announcement on Twitter, also revealing that John Hart will take over Wren's job in an interim role.

"The Braves have dismissed general manager Frank Wren," @Braves tweeted. "John Hart has been named as the interim GM."

Hart is currently an MLB Network analyst and has also worked with the Braves as a senior analyst since 2013. He takes on the GM role after having served in the same position, in a permanent capacity, for the Cleveland Indians and Texas Rangers, according to The Sports Network.

The news comes just hours after the Braves were officially eliminated yesterday from National League playoff contention after losing their eighth game in nine tries. They dropped a 10-2 decision to the New York Mets at home.

As the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports, this is the first time in nearly 25 years that the Braves have had to fire a GM.

Prior to his ousting, Wren had spent seven seasons as the Braves' GM and had been with the club for 15 years. He took over the GM role from John Schuerholz at the conclusion of the 2007 season, when Schuerholz was promoted to team president.

According to the Associated Press, a three-man team has been named to find a permanent replacement for Wren. Schuerholz, Hart and former Braves manager Bobby Cox will head the search.

NBC Sports has suggested that the search may not take very long, as the team's current assistant GM John Coppolella seems to be a "very likely candidate." According to NBC, he is "well-regarded within the game and fits the Braves profile of promoting from within."
