How I Met Your Mother Cast Talks Series Finale in New Season 9 DVD Clip

The Season 9 and Complete Series DVD of How I Met Your Mother hits shelves on Tuesday, and TVLine has posted an exclusive clip of the cast discussing the final, polarizing episode of the show.

For those who need a refresher, Tracy aka The Mother (Cristin Milioti) passes away about a decade after she and Ted (Josh Radnor) first meet. Ted finishes telling the story of how they met to his children, who encourage him to go after Robin (Cobie Smulders). He does so, and stands outside her apartment with the blue French horn as the show ends.

The finale divided fans, but the actors on the show went so far as to call co-creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas "narrative geniuses." Radnor said in TVLine's exclusive clip that the duo is great at "withholding information until it's time for that information to come forward, at which point it changes everything."

"I'm really excited that we got to flash forward and see where these people ended up," Smulders added.

The DVD also reveals Alyson Hannigan and Jason Segel were the last two to learn about the finale's emotional turn. "[Craig] gave us the five-minute version, by the end of which his lip was quivering and he was getting ready to cry," Segel said. "We felt the same. It was just such a relief to find out there was a plan."
