New York Mets chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon announced on Tuesday afternoon that the team has agreed to a three-year contract extension with general manager Sandy Alderson. The new deal will keep Alderson in the Mets' front office through the end of the 2017 season.

Alderson has been with the team since 2010, when he signed a four-year deal with an option for the 2015 season. As CBS Sports reports, rather than pick up the option for Alderson, the Mets decided to present him with a new contract.

The Mets have compiled a 301-341 record under Alderson's watch, and he is credited for compiling a rather impressive pitching rotation that includes Zack Wheeler (3.49 ERA), Rookie of the Year candidate Jacob deGrom (2.63 ERA) and the soon-to-be rehabbed Matt Harvey, who is expected to rejoin the team in 2015.

"We are excited about the direction the team is headed and look forward to Sandy continuing his efforts to build the Mets into a postseason contender," Wilpon said, according to ESPN. "Sandy and his staff have built our minor league system into one of the best in baseball, and will continue to balance player development along with making key additions that will help us reach our goals."

Wilpon also revealed he would be bringing back Terry Collins as the club's manager next year, after a team option was exercised.

"Terry Collins has done an excellent job for us this season," Alderson said. "The team has played hard throughout the year and this is a reflection of Terry's energy and his passion for the game and for the Mets. We look forward to his leadership again next season."

Collins, who also joined the team in 2010, shares the same 301-341 record. He has the ability to lead the team to its first .500 finish during his time in the dugout if the Mets can win five of their remaining six games.
