The old foes were back at it again on Tuesday night.

Madison Bumgarner hit Yasiel Puig with a pitch - an 88 mph cutter to the ankle - in the first inning of the Los Angeles Dodgers' 4-2 win over the San Francisco Giants at Dodger Stadium, and it wasn't a pretty sight.

Puig remained on the ground for a few moments before ultimately charging the mound and gesturing at Bumgarner.

While he was on the ground, Puig says Bumgarner initiated the skirmish.

"He looked at me and said, 'What are you looking at?'" Puig told reporters through an interpreter. "I reacted after he made that comment."

Bumgarner didn't even try to deny it.

"Well, I probably said something first," Bumgarner said. "He's sitting there staring at me."

The Giants pitcher then threw down his glove, and that's when home plate umpire Adrian Johnson and Giants catcher Buster Posey stepped in to try to relieve the conflict.

Johnson held Puig back, while Posey stood in the middle. Both teams' benches cleared, though no fights broke out. The umpires issued warnings to both sides.

This isn't the first time the two have gotten into it. On May 9, Puig homered off Bumgarner and flipped his bat in the air to celebrate. As he made his way around the bases, they had some words with each other.

"I hit a home run, and we had a little back and forth," Puig recalled. "I'm not sure if it continued tonight. I just reacted tonight."

As far as manager Don Mattingly is concerned, Puig needs to keep his temper in check as the Dodgers prepare for the playoffs.

"I just told Yasiel we need him in the game, we need him to stay in control and not let it escalate," Mattingly told MLB.com. "Play baseball. Make sure we play them tomorrow and we have a chance to play them later [in the playoffs]. The best way to respond is to play baseball, the best way is to do it with the bat, the best way is to do it with the glove. I feel there's a good chance there's more games to come, and we need him playing baseball and not let that get out of control."
