Two Vancouver-based newspapers came under fire Tuesday night for using a racial marker to identify Vancouver Canucks prospect Jordan Subban in a photo.

The image, which appeared on the websites for The Vancouver Sun and The Province, was adorned with the caption, "Vancouver Canucks celebrate goal by Jordan Subban (dark guy in the middle)."

The Internet immediately responded with outraged readers taking social media by storm to criticize the two newspapers for their lapse in judgment.

"#Vancouver Sun runs photo of #Canucks prospect Jordan Subban with caption 'dark guy in the middle'....smh," tweeted NHL Expert Picks. ("SMH" stands for "shaking my head.")

A fan who goes by @thepowderfinger tweeted, "Vancouver Sun and Province run same caption of Jordan Subban: 'dark guy in the middle.' Says a lot about moral compass of sports media here."

The papers heard the cries, and the caption has since been removed and replaced with a more politically correct version.

As reported by CTV News, the Sun's digital deputy editor, Gillian Burnett, took to Twitter first to explain the gaffe.

"That cutline, written by a photog, should NEVER have been written, let alone made it online," she said Tuesday night. "Egregious error that we regret."

By Wednesday morning, the two papers had posted their apologies.

"Last night we ran a photo caption that should never have been written, let alone run online. We apologize to @jordansubban," the Sun tweeted. "The Sun is looking into this so we can make sure it doesn't happen again."

Three hours later, the Province wrote, "The Province regrets an insensitive description of Canuck Jordan Subban in a photo caption on our website last night. We apologize to Subban, the Canucks and their fans for any offence. We are examining our process to ensure it can never happen again."
