Tonight kicked off Season 2 of the Golden Globe-winning Fox series Brooklyn Nine-Nine. The end of last season followed Jake Peralta (Andy Samberg) getting "fired" from the NYPD all in an attempt to go undercover with the FBI and bring down the philanthropic Lucas Wint and the Iannucci crime family.

At the start of Season 2, titled "Undercover," Peralta is still undercover, at the wedding of Angie and Marco, a couple undoubtedly linked with the mafia Samberg's character is investigating. The pseudo-mobster is seen giving a speech to the couple about life sentences... claiming they've just entered the best one yet. "Make us proud have a son," he says, ending the speech.

During a brief lip-to-lip show of trust with some of the family's higher ups, due to the fact that he's one of them, the then undercover Peralta initiates a raid at the wedding following comments that while the wedding was beautiful, the meatballs were "a little dry." Instantly, NYPD swarm the venue and an all out raid pursues with Detective Terry Jeffords (Terry Crews) dragging Peralta out to safety. It would appear his undercover operation is over –– or so we thought.

Back at the station, Peralta is welcomed warmly – mainly by Charles Boyle (Joe Lo Truglio), who originated the idea the gang give him a cold shoulder as a joke. Of course, it didn't work. Samberg's character is quickly greeted by his team and caught up to speed on the main three things that took place during his six-month absence: Terry chipping his tooth and having a lisp for a week; Amy Santiago (Melissa Fumero) and Boyle wearing the same outfit, which apparently looked better on the latter; and Captain Raymond Holt (Andre Braugher) banning headphones due to Gina Linetti's (Chelsea Peretti) "The Gina Incident."

Afterwards, Peralta and Santiago grab some privacy to discuss how things left off before he went undercover, in which he admitted to liking her. He now claims, however, that it was a mistake and he "didn't mean it." She discloses she is still in a relationship with Teddy –– "romantic styles."

Diaz is then approached by Terry, who wears a sign reading "Confused Old Woman." It appears Captain Holt has been calling for a series of drills around the office in which Crews' character plays several roles and has the detectives help him through scenarios. In this instance, it's Rosa Diaz's (Stephanie Beatriz) job to aid the aforementioned character.

It seems that after six months, not one soul knows about the other incident that took place between Gina and Charles. In case you don't remember, Season 1 ended with the two sleeping together following a drunken night. Surprisingly, Boyle has been able to keep his mouth shut, but since Peralta is back on the team, Gina realizes it's only a matter of time before he knows, considering he tells his buddy everything.

She pleads him to keep it between them, noting that she only sleeps with "bike messengers or better." Boyle agrees.

During his reinstatement, Peralta is clued into the fact that 15 mafia names were taken into custody during the raid at the wedding. He's upset to hear that "Freddy" got away and suggests he go back undercover to find him. Despite the disagreements from the FBI and Captain Holt, Peralta does so. Holt explains that some things are out of one's control.

Both he and Boyle discuss a plan to discover the location of Freddy, but it seems all Boyle can focus on is finding out the name of Peralta's best mafia friend –– Derek. In the end, Peralta comes up with a plan, which involves a little beat down from Boyle at a local mob hangout.

All the while, Diaz completes her drill with the "confused old woman," but no one on the squad is aware of the reason behind the drills, and it seems Captain Holt will not tell them.

Peralta visits a mafia "friend" at a restaurant and asks for the whereabouts of Freddy. The bartender explains he cannot tell but he does clue the undercover cop (undercover unbeknownst to him, of course) to the fact that Freddy's girlfriend, Bianca, asked his regular order be delivered to her address. Thrilled with the info, Peralta tries leaving without Boyle's disturbance because there's no need for that part of the plan. Unfortunately, Boyle doesn't get the hint and does so anyway, ending with, "There's more with that came from. I've got a real wet mouth." Strange? Absolutely. But hilarious nonetheless.

Following their fight in the car about what just went down, the two arrive at Bianca's residence and Peralta once again goes into character and has Boyle douse him in cologne. He then tells his partner that when he clicks his car keys, he's to come in.

hAt the same time, Holt has tasked Terry with another character for yet another drill: a seven-year-old boy.

We then are met by Bianca, played by former Saturday Night Live player and Obvious Child star Jenny Slate. She questions whether or not Peralta is "Jakey Lady Hands" or "Jake the Jew." He hopes the latter.

Once invited inside Bianca pulls out a gun and demands he hold up his hands, claiming she knows he is the rat. It's then revealed that Freddy is gone and Peralta is, in fact, Jakey Lady Hands...

Following a commercial, the show's lead is seen incessantly clicking his keys, which causes a bit of a situation for Boyle in the car with the doors constantly locking and unlocking. Luckily he makes his way up to the apartment and has Bianca drop her weapon.

The two question Freddy's girlfriend, who refuses to give up his location. However, after learning that her younger sister is also sleeping with the Mafioso, she tells them he's heading for Barbados and is currently at Teterboro Airport.

Terry is then taken into Holt's office and told that the reason behind the drills is because a new police commissioner is reportedly coming in. He merely wants his people to be prepared. Sadly, he knows nothing more.

At Teterboro Airport, it seems Peralta and Boyle missed Freddy by one hour. He's already on his way to Barbados.

Back at the station, Boyle attempts to bring up Peralta's spirits by inviting him out for a drink, but inadvertently discloses that the squad has prepped a surprised party for him.

Realizing that some things are indeed out of his control, Peralta goes to the party and is greeted with a somewhat heartfelt speech from Holt... after asking him to do so. He then tells Santiago his feelings for her are true. While flattered, she maintains that she's with Teddy.

Near the episode's end, Boyle and Gina talk. She's surprised, and delighted, to hear that their mistake is still a secret, saying, "Sounds like our nightmare is finally over." Unfortunately, it would appear not, because "Undercover" ends with them waking up in bed together ... again!
