For the first of three nights this year, the NFL rocked Wembley, and not only did it bring the United States's favourite sport to London, but it brought America, too.

From Krispy Kreme donuts to chilli dogs to official portable NFL stores — and more than 100,000 National Football League jerseys being worn across the city — America took over London.

The Miami Dolphins took on the struggling Oakland Raiders, and Ryan Tannehill starred after legends Dan Marino and Bob Griese were introduced to the 83,000-plus crowd. On top of that, rock legends Def Leppard entertained the fans with a pre-game concert, but sadly, that was as good as it got for the Raiders, as Derek Carr and Co. struggled.

It is going to be a long, hard road back for them.

The gates opened at 4 p.m. London time, and fans were enjoying the brilliant atmosphere with almost all of them wearing their team's NFL jersey, covering every team. Soon after, fans were able to see the players warm up, the Raiderettes — Oakland's cheerleaders — worked plenty of routines until the action began.

Before that, Def Leppard came out for a concert while the cheerleaders continued to perform and before the players were ready to rock the field.

The Raiders stormed out to an early lead, but soon after the fans, players and coaches learned it was a mismatch, with the Dolphins dominating in every area, rolling out to a, 38-14, victory. Strangely, this was a good result for the Raiders, as they could have embarrassed themselves more, luckily avoiding several of the Dolphins's attempts to scores.

Tannehill was the star of the show, and evidently took inspiration from Marino being introduced to the fans before the game, throwing for two touchdowns and 278 yards, thereby showing glimpses of the elite quarterback he could become.

Sadly, Carr, his opposite number, was nowhere near as good, showing many rookie struggles, including a second half injury which sidelined him. Everybody was talking about Tannehill, and 15,000-plus fans proudly wore a Tannehill jersey.

He enjoyed the experience, too, it seemed.

He explained, "That was fun. The ambition we had going on this trip was getting the offense moving in the right direction, and we did that. It shows the character we have in the team to come out and win, but we have to build on it."

With the first of three games at Wembley this season being a success, can the NFL avoid granting London more NFL access each season?

America, the British are embracing your sport.
