The Devil Wears Prada actress Anne Hathaway might be a star on the big screen now, but she admits that fame wasn't always easy to handle. The 31-year-old star opened up about her early years of stardom in Elle U.K.'s October issue.

"This famed thing? F*cked me up for a really long time," The Elle U.K. cover girl revealed to the publication via E! News. "I didn't know how to do it; I didn't know how to engage with it; it stressed me out. And people would say, 'You just have to be yourself,' and I was like, 'But I don't know who that is yet!'"

The Les Miserables actress looked stunning on her new cover for the mag wearing a black pantsuit and a bold red lip to go with. After winning her Oscar for her role in Les Mis, the actress took a break from acting because she thought the public needed a break from her. During her cover shoot she explained what she learned during her break from fame.

"The thing I've learned this past year is to chill out. I think when you're young and struggling to find yourself, there's something alluring about the idea of being tortured," she told the publication. "Life for me these days is a lot about letting the unknown be wonderful, and letting myself feel safe."

The Princess Diaries actress's short hiatus from the business ended at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2014 when she appeared in the small film, Song One. "I think there's a common misconception about actors –– that we have a lot more control than we do about when things happen," Anne told Huffington Post about how Song One came to be.

"We met on this in 2011 – I was working on Batman – and then we developed this script and the music for two years, then we shot it in June. And we had been planning on shooting in the fall and then Chris Nolan called with an offer for a part in his new movie."

In order to get the film made, she had to wait until her schedule allowed it. It had nothing to do with the fact that she wanted to do two big films than a smaller one. "It didn't have anything to do with Oscars or anything like that, it was always the story that I believed in," she added.

Anne is now fully returning to the limelight in the upcoming film Interstellar with Matthew McConaughey which is set to hit theaters on November 7, 2014.
