The murder mystery has officially begun, with all the clues set in place on Fox's Gracepoint. Though this is a re-imagining of the BBC's Broadchurch, actor David Tennant, who knows a thing or two about remakes as the 10th Doctor Who, promises that the characters — Detectives Emmett Carter (Tennant) and Ellie Miller (Anna Gunn) — are "very different."
Both TV shows follow an ensemble drama exploring how a shocking death might affect a small community. Chris Chibnall, who wrote Doctor Who's "Dinosaurs on a Spaceship" episode and created both series, returned to pen the pilot and executive produce. The Fright Night actor reunites with the scribe playing the lead role of Carter, a variation of his previous alter-ego, Alec Hardy.
According to TVLine, the Gracepoint producers want to achieve the success of their U.K. predecessor, but also add some major tweaks. The U.S. version will follow a different path sooner than viewers might think.
Executive producer Carolyn Bernstein mentions that there was hesitation to differentiate themselves: "We did consider different starting places, different ideas for the first episode. The way that the story was told [in Broadchurch] was so well done, why would we contort ourselves? It really felt like the smartest, best launching pad."
Bernstein continues to say that by the third or fourth episode, "It really diverges in significant ways from the original."
The series may take a different route, much like AMC's The Killing. In the original Danish police procedural, Linden and Holder couldn't get along because they despised each other. Does this mean the mystery solved and the identity of the killer will be different?
Tennant promises his character will be "very different" in the upcoming story arc.
In an interview with USA Today, the actor further discusses the variations.
"Carver and Ellie are much more combative," he said. "[Gracepoint's] Ellie is much more sure of herself. Hardy and Ellie is a slightly more patronizing, withering thing" in Broadchurch.
Gracepoint continues Thursdays on Fox at 9 p.m.
