Iron Man 4 hopefuls may be in luck as Robert Downey Jr. — who plays Tony Stark, alter ego of Iron Man — said he'd do another installment of the Marvel comic book movie series if Mel Gibson directs it.

In a recent interview with Deadline, the Marvel star rethought of the possibility of a fourth Iron Man chapter when the website asked if he'd do the fourth installment if his friend Gibson directed it. His response was optimistic.

"Correct ... Why not? That movie would be bananas," he said.

After talking about Gibson's troubles in the media being what RDJ claimed as "... a fundamentally different guy," one needs to understand the nature of the business.

"But honestly we are talking about a competitive business and it all comes down to this: Because he is so gifted as a storyteller and a director, I don't know that he requires some sort of mass forgiveness," RDJ explained.

Downey's contract with Marvel expired after Iron Man 3, according to Variety — something Downey talked about this summer on The Daily Show, admitting to "renegotiating" his contract.

As Downey stated, Marvel would need a great storyteller such as Gibson to play-out the trilogies. Marvel has had an extensive amount of movie releases, not including Iron ManThor: The Dark World, Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Guardians of the Galaxy.

Is their even room for an Iron Man 4?

On the other hand, if an Iron Man 4 directing debut for Gibson doesn't happen — and it likely won't — Gibson has at least given Downey some beneficial parenting tips.

"I always say, too, that if you want to judge a man or a woman then look at their kids," said Downey. "He has the healthiest, happiest, most productive kids you could ever meet or know, and I'm fortunate to be friendly with several of them. He did a lot right, and there's stuff he taught me about parenting that didn't sink in at the time but have proven to be true."
