John Galliano, one of fashion's most controversial designers, is taking over the creative direction of Maison Martin Margiela. According to WWD, he will control design leadership of all Margiela lines, including couture and women's and men's ready-to-wear collections.

"Margiela is ready for a new charismatic creative soul," said Renzo Rosso, president of Only the Brave, (Maison Martin Margiela parent company). "John Galliano is one of the greatest, undisputed talents of all time- a unique, exceptional couturier for a maison that always challenged and innovated the world of fashion. I look forward to his return to create that fashion dream that only he can create, and wish him to here find his new home."

Galliano has been under the radar since being fired from Christian Dior and his signature fashion house in 2011. His dismissal from Dior was the result of a series of drunken altercations. Galliano was charged with public insult and sentenced to suspended fines totaling $8,400. At his trial, Galliano blamed "work-related stress and multiple addictions" for his behavior. The designer is seeking compensation, up to $7.6 million, for wrongful dismissal. A works tribunal is expected to begin hearings on the case on November 4.

Bringing in a notorious designer like Galliano may be a risky move by Rosso. But bringing more attention to Margiela is probably what the brand needs, regardless if that attention is positive or negative.

Fans of Galliano are excited to see what the designer has in store for the Paris-based fashion house. Margiela's spring 2015 show, with avid fan Kanye West sitting front row, featured styles like floral dresses, nude bodysuits and "Willy Wonka" sunglasses. His first designs are expected to debut in January during Paris Couture Week. January can't come soon enough!
