It looks like Michael Phelps wouldn't be getting back in the pool as soon as he thought. The Olympic swimmer has been placed on a 6-month suspension from the sport after being arrested for a DUI earlier this month. The star was arrested on September 30 after driving while under the influence, speeding, and crossing double yellow lines on Interstate 95.

According to People, the star registered a blood-alcohol level of .14, almost double the legal limit where he was driving in Maryland.

Not only is Phelps being suspended from the sports but he also has to give up his spot at the world championships for the sport, which will take place in Russia next summer, according to NBC News. This is a huge blow as this event is the precursor to the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic games, which Phelps said he would also compete at.

On top of the suspension, the swimmer is set to lose his $1,750 stipend per month, which will ultimately end up costing him $10,500.

This is the second time that Phelps has been suspended by the governing body of the sport. According to People, back in 2009, Phelps was suspended for a 3-month period after photos leaked of him smoking marijuana out of a bong.

According to the news site, USA Swimming said Michael was in violation of rules that were set out in their 2014 Rule Book.

"Michael's conduct was serious and required significant consequences," Chuck Wielgus, executive director of the sport explained. "We endorse and are here to fully support his personal development."

While Phelps will still be able to train for the Olympic games, he will be unable to attend any meets until his 6-month suspension is up on April 6, 2015.
