First lady Michelle Obama is on the cover of the November 2014 issue of Redbook with five female military veterans to raise awareness for veterans issues.

Redbook headed to Washington, D.C., in an attempt to make an impact on the first lady regarding what it's like as a military veteran — unemployment and adapting to the civilian world are among the top issues.

Obama promoted education because she believes that's what's important to the world's future. Here's what she had to say on veterans' concerns:

"Veterans shouldn't have to wait for a job. So one of our biggest challenges is how do you take so many years of on-the-ground experience and compare that with a degree that may have nothing to do with the work?" she said.

As Obama took a kind ear to the struggles of the five veterans, she wanted to let Americans know that no matter what field they are in, they can aid veterans.

"Most Americans — whether you're in business or you live in a neighborhood or you belong to a congregation — you don't know how you can help these men and women and their families," she said. "It really helps to provide a definition of the how for the millions of Americans who want to step up and do their part."

The first lady believes it's her mission to bring awareness to in-need veterans. She wants the story to filter in to the next presidency.

"I want to continue to lift up these stories so that the country doesn't forget," she said. "And my hope is that whoever lives in this White House in the coming years will find a way to continue these efforts [and make them] a permanent part of the government role.

"We believe that efforts of Joining Forces should last far beyond this administration; that, you know the spotlight we put on these families, these issues and our services members should be something that we do forever and across party lines."
