'The Walking Dead' Renewed For Another Season...Plus Spin-off Spoilers: Find Out What New Show Is About!

The Walking Dead is alive and well thanks to its network AMC renewing the series for another season.

The news is both surprising and not surprising to fans of the hit show. What's surprising is the fact that season five is only a few days away from premiering. Usually, networks wait till the show is underway to renew it or not. However, it's not all that surprising given how much of a monster hit the show is.

The Zombie smash is the #1 scripted series in the 18-49 advertiser demographic and the highest-rated show in cable history....yes, cable history! According to The Hollywood Reporter, last season was seen by an average of 18.4 million total viewers and 12.2 million in the 18-49 demographic.

"We could not be more excited for October 12th as we share new episodes of The Walking Dead with fans around the globe," AMC President Charlie Collier said in a statement. "In advance of Sunday's season five premiere, AMC proudly confirms a sixth season order of this extraordinary series. Thank you to Robert Kirkman, Scott Gimple, the terrific executive producers, and the entire team who brings this compelling world and these rich characters to life."

"There's plenty more Dead ahead thanks to their impressive, collective effort."

Fans of the show will also be thrilled to know a spinoff is in the works that will focus on the early days of the zombie apocalypse, as per The Hollywood Reporter. It is expected to air in 2015 so you'll have to wait a little bit for that one.

"There are many corners of The Walking Dead universe that remain unseen in the shadows. Being given the opportunity to shine a light into those corners and see what lurks out there is an absolute thrill," said Kirkman, who created the show based on his comic book series. "I know the fans are anxious to hear what Dave and I have been cooking up for this new universe of The Walking Dead, and I'm happy to be one step closer to sharing it with them."
