Real Housewives of Atlanta star Phaedra Parks is not doing as well as everyone thinks following news that she hired a lawyer to start divorce proceedings against her husband Apollo Nida.

"Phaedra is really disappointed with how all of this has turned out," a source told People.

Apollo plead guilty to various charges of fraud and was sentenced to eight years in prison followed by five years of supervised release. This isn't the first time the RHOA star went to prison. Before getting married to Phaedra in 2009, he spent six years behind bars for car theft.

Even with all of Apollo's history, according to People, Phaedra "had no idea any of that [illegal activity] was going on."

Even though divorce can be difficult, the source tells the mag Phaedra will be better for it.

"This divorce is going to be the best thing for her. Apollo was always really jealous of her success and the fact that she was the breadwinner."

The worst part of all of this is that Phaedra and Apollo's two young boys, Ayden and Dylan, are the ones who will suffer the most. However, Phaedra vows to do the best for her kids as a single mom.

"The really sad part is their two little boys having to go through all of this," according to the source. "She's a strong woman and a great mom and really adores her boys."

The reality couple has had their struggles documented on Real Housewives of Atlanta from the beginning. For years, Phaedra fought with co-star Kenya Moore because she thought Kenya was sexting and having an affair with Apollo. That storyline still plays out in the upcoming season of RHOA.

The new season of Real Housewives of Atlanta premieres November 9 on Bravo.
