In late June, television personality Ann Curry appeared in an emotional broadcast on NBC's "Today" show, announcing her swift departure from the show after NBC executives asked her to resign because of lower ratings and other more personal factors, including the way Curry dressed and her refusal to cover her graying hair.
And on Thursday morning (Aug. 9), Curry appeared in a rather awkward and tension-filled post-departure performance on the "Today" show alongside former co-host Matt Lauer during a live broadcast from the 2012 London Olympics. Curry showed little emotion towards her former right-hand man, offering little response to Lauer's "nice to see you" introduction and "good to see you" closing.
Curry had been a strong personality at the NBC newsrooms since 1990, recruiting a large fan base throughout the years. According to a recent interview with Curry in People magazine, "Today" producers continuously dissed her wardrobe and appearance. But Curry stayed true to herself to please fans, stating, ""I'm encouraged by my bosses to wear these ridiculously high-heeled shoes because women say, 'I love your shoes!' So if it makes women happy, I'll wear them. But I'm still going to be me."
NBC tried to ease Curry's departure by offering her a position as "anchor-at-large" on the "Today" show. They also promised her the opportunity to report from the London Olympics, which finally took place on Thursday. Some speculate that "Today" is trying to scale back Curry's coverage in order to spotlight her replacement, Savannah Guthrie.
The broadcast footage of Curry and Lauer's first onscreen interaction since her resignations has garnered millions of hits online. Watch it here:
