Marvel Comics has teased they would kill off their popular X-Men mutant superhero in the epic conclusion, Death of Wolverine #4. With the final installment now in newsstands, does the demise of Wolverine, aka Logan, show him "at his very best?"

The Swamp Thing writer had the daunting task of coming up with a way to kill off X-Men's most popular mutant. Through four issues, the storyline followed Logan as he faced the inevitable conclusion. Though the adamantium clawed anti-hero has had a brush with the Grim Reaper before, this time his fast-working healing factor was missing in action.

In comic book history, Superman faced his death in an intense brawl with Doomsday. Archie Andrews took a bullet for his best friend, Kevin Keller. Even Batman's son, Damien, met a grisly death after encountering one of his clones.

In the first issue of Death of Wolverine, Nuke, the super-patriot, represented the dark reflection of his opponent. In the second, Sabretooth claws out Logan's eye, bring him an inch closer to his finale. In the penultimate installment, Kitty Pryde helped his wounded friend battle against his martial arts instructor.

The Red Lanterns scribe reveals the story the conclusion he had in mind. On his official website, The Land of 10,000 Things, the story didn't involve the X-Man fighting off an alien invasion. This wasn't a a huge event, just something microcosmic between himself and the reader.

Soule explains, "Logan doesn't die saving the world, in one sense he sort of does, as Cornelius was intending to screw over the planet, given enough time, but it's not the typical doomsday device thing. He dies saving three people. No one knows he did that - probably not even the people he saved."

Readers knew Wolverine was going to die; there was no turning back. We're not sure when Wolvie will return from the grave. Professor Xavier hasn't resurrected yet, but his future grandson from the future in showed up during All-New X-Men's Battle of the Atom

As for now, Soule adds, "We saw him at his very best at the very end - that's the story I wanted to write."

Death of Wolverine #4 is out in stores now. Readers, will you miss the mutant superhero?
