American Horror Story: Freak Show heated up last night, as the FX series unveiled the first part of its two-episode Halloween extravaganza. We got some great, last-minute costume ideas from the episode, like Patti LaBelle's Woody Woodpecker and, of course, the insane outfit of Twisty the Clown. But our favorite part of the show was when Jessica Lange's character Elsa Mar belted out a rendition of Lana Del Rey's "Gods and Monsters."

Creator Ryan Murphy talked to E! News about his inspiration for putting modern-day songs into a show set in the 1950s. And while some might be thrown off by the Jim Morrison reference in the Del Rey cover, we think we'd rather hear these contemporary songs that might not entirely make sense rather than some old Motown hit.

"I really wanted to do an homage to my friend and idol Baz Luhrmann," Murphy explained to the entertainment website, "who does such amazing things with music and period. We didn't want to do Happy Days, we didn't want to do all '50s music. So, what we did was, we decided to do musical numbers when they're needed, not all the time, that feature artists who have identified as odd, different freaks, that felt like outcasts. We did Lana Del Rey, Kurt Cobain, David Bowie. People who I admire who really changed the landscape of music, based on them feeling like outsiders."

In the clip above, Elsa takes to the stage on Halloween night, a big no-no among carnies, as there is a superstition that says if any freak performs on the holiday, then they'll summon the spirit of Edward Mordrake, who'll appear at the carnival looking for blood.

The second part of the episode will air Oct. 29.
