According to a number of new reports, a new film starring Julianne Moore and Ellen Page has been barred from filming scenes at a catholic high school due to the "subject matter" of the movie. Entitled Freehold, this film is based on a true story in which these leading ladies play a lesbian couple. After barring the production, Salesian High School in New Rochelle, New York has been getting some negative press.

Buzzfeed reported on this production news and spoke with the film's producer, Michael Shamberg.

"I respect their right to say no," he said. "But it's sad."

Ellen Page even took to Twitter to comment on the news:

According to The Hollywood Reporter, a location manager for Freehold explained the plot of the film to some school staff members, causing a snowball effect, eventually leading to this news.

"They turned us down because of the subject matter," Shamberg told The Hollywood Reporter.

The publication also shared excerpts from an e-mail sent to Salesian's principal, John Flaherty, explaining the film a bit better. Shamberg told the school official that Freehold is "not about gay marriage, nor are the women attempting to get married. It is about recognizing the dignity of a woman who was a brave civil servant. I believe the theme of the movie is what Pope Francis recognized just yesterday when he called for the Church to welcome and accept gay people."
