"The Protagonists" was this year's theme at Fashion Group International's Night of Stars. Unsurprisingly, almost everyone was thinking of one of the industry's most iconic protagonists: Oscar de la Renta.

"I am thinking of Oscar," said 'Superstar Award' winner Diane von Furstenberg.

"Oscar's accomplishments were extraordinary," FGI's Margaret Hayes remarked in her introductory remarks of the late designer, who had also been a member of the organization.

According to WWD, British model, singer/songwriter, Karen Elson, was on hand to present Diane with her award. Other designers receiving awards included: Alexander McQueen's Sarah Burton, Peter Copping, Joseph Altuzarra, Elie Tahari and Brunello Cucinelli.

As for the guests, Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoren were catching up with Sean O'Pry. Marc Jacobs, last year's Superstar honoree, came to present Copping with his award, while Matt Lauer, Starbucks' Howard Schultz, Olivia Palermo and Johannes Huebl were guests of Cucinelli.

Diane and de la Renta shared a beautiful friendship. Earlier this week, at the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund show, Diane spoke of her longtime friend, while holding back tears.

"We had something very sad happen," said designer. "He was an incredible friend, incredible designer. He was a great American designer with Latin roots and European training. He was incredible... Actually, Reese [Witherspoon] is wearing an Oscar dress in the issue [of Vogue] this month. He's just irreplaceable so I don't want to be sad, but I think that it's important that we remember him and how happy he was. He loved life, so he would not want us to be sad. I just want to say we love him and we'll never forget him. He will always stay in our hearts."

Diane met Oscar when she first moved to New York. They became friends and she even bought a house in Connecticut to be close to him.

"Every year, my husband and I spent time with him and his wife, Annette, on our boat. He loved to swim in the clear blue waters of the Mediterranean. He was forever grateful to be alive and we are forever grateful to have known him. He will stay in our hearts forever."
